DONALD EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT
Monday 12th – Friday 23rd February 2024

  1. On Wednesday, 14th February 2024, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, organized two programs:

1st  Program: Education-USA Orientation: The program provided information to participants on undergraduate and postgraduate admission processes and scholarship opportunities in the United States of America. The program attracted participants from the University and neighbouring communities.

2nd Program: Love for Humanity & Environment: Donald Ekong Library marked St. Valentine’s Day at the American Corner, Port Harcourt, under the theme “Love for Humanity & Environment”. The Coordinator, Centre Libraries, Dr. Mary I.G-Worlu made a presentation on the importance of love, attitude, and dedication to work. This event was well received by the participating staff, students, and other patrons of the Library.

One hundred and seventy-three (173) researchers patronized the American Corner in the week under review. They were from the Faculties of Management, Social Sciences, Humanities, Media and Communication Studies, Engineering, Science, Education, Technology, and Banking and Finance.

  1. On Thursday, 15th February 2024, the University Librarian held a general meeting with the Management and staff of the Donald E. U Ekong Library where issues concerning the growth and development of the Library were discussed.
  1. On Friday, 16th February 2024, The University Librarian, Prof. Helen U. Emasealu, received 20 copies of a book donation for library retention. The book is tiled Managing Contracts in the Supply Chain: Core Values for Public-Private Sectors Survival written by Dr. Bola Afolabi.

The University Librarian thanked the donor and used the medium to encourage other Faculties, Departments, Centres, and library patrons to donate books and other information resources to enhance further research in the Library.

  1. The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduates) and the Research Commons (for postgraduates) sections on the first floor of the library are open to those who wish to access the Library’s electronic resources using the ICT facilities in the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is open to faculty members.
  1. The Library has received an update of its Scopus Database with the new content. https://www.scopus.com/home.url The database provides registered Faculty members and researchers with the most extensive abstract and cited database on peer-reviewed literature and information materials across disciplines.
  2. The Library has received an update on its Science Direct Database. https://www.sciencedirect.com The database provides researchers and registered library users with information resources for scientific, technical, and medical research. It offers full-text journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and 11,000 books.
  1. Weekly statistics of the patronage of Donald Ekong Library showed a 30.26% increase from three thousand nine hundred and nineteen users (3,919) in the previous week to 5,105 users in the current week.

 

 

Monday 19th – Friday 23rd February 2024 

  1. On Tuesday, February 20th, 2024, The University Librarian Prof. Helen Emasealu, participated in the 34th Convocation Command Performance titled “GRIT” written by Obari Gomba which exemplified the creative prowess and intellectual depth present within the University’s academic community. The event took place at the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, Faculty of Humanities.
  1. On Wednesday, 21st February 2024, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, organized four programs:

1st Program: Education USA Orientation: The program offered information on tertiary education opportunities and admission procedures in the USA. Participants were also provided information on scholarship opportunities by the program coordinator.

2nd Program: Film Show: A Force More Powerful: The program provided participants with a compelling and informative exploration of the power of nonviolent resistance and its enduring impact on societies around the world. Participants are deeply appreciative of the effectiveness of nonviolence as a force for social and political transformation.

3rd Program: Cartoon Creation: Processes and Techniques: This program offered participants a rich and rewarding experience, providing valuable insights into the art and craft of cartooning while fostering creativity, expression, and skill development.

4th Program: Digital Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities in Rivers State: The program raised awareness about the importance of digital accessibility for persons with disabilities to participants, highlighting the barriers they face in accessing and utilizing digital technologies. One Hundred and Forty-Eight (148) attended the programs. They were from the Faculties of

Economics, Dentistry, Humanities, Social Sciences, Agriculture, Engineering, Management Science, Education, Law, Media and Communication Studies, School of Science Laboratory Technology, Basic Medical Science and Computing.

  1. The management of Donald Ekong Library, under the leadership of Prof. Helen Emasealu, the University Librarian, On Thursday, February 22nd, 2024, organized a book exhibition in conjunction with the 34th Convocation of the University. The exhibition displayed a variety of books, Journals, and Audio-visuals among others, chosen to showcase the academic achievements and intellectual richness of the University’s library resources.
  1.   1. The Library has received an update of its OnePetro Database with the new content. https://onepetro.org/journals The database provides registered Faculty members and researchers with information on the oil and gas exploration and production industry.
  1. The Library received an update on its African Journals Online (AJOL) Database: https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ajol, the world’s most extensive database housing peer-reviewed, African-published scholarly works in various research discipline works in various research disciplines.
  1. Weekly statistics of the patronage of Donald Ekong Library have experienced a significant increase of 22% compared to the previous week from 5,105 users in the previous week to 6,237 users in the current week.
  1. The Donald E.U. Ekong Library, supporting reading, learning, and research activities, has acquired additional research databases under the Other Educational Resources (OER) initiative. These databases are:
    1. DIVA – Digital Scientific Archive
    2. DART-Europe
    3. EThOS
    4. The Network Digital Library of Thesis and Dissertations (NDLTD)
    5. ProQuest (Kindly note that users must come to the library for registration with their institutional email to access ProQuest). These databases can be accessed at the library website via: https://www.library.uniport.edu.ng/other-educational-resources/

Supplementary Information:
