DONALD EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT

DONALD EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT
Monday 8th – Friday 12th July 2024

  1. On Tuesday, 9th July 2024, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, organized two (2) programs:
  • 1st program: Freelancing: Making Your Career and Product Visible: The program provided participants with practical steps to working independently and offering client services on a project or contract basis rather than being employed full-time by a single organization. The program also provided a comprehensive guide for individuals looking to start or enhance their freelancing careers, focusing on making their career and product visible to potential clients.
  • 2nd program: Education-USA Orientation: The programme provided information to participants on undergraduate and postgraduate admission processes and scholarship opportunities in the United States of America. The programme attracted participants from the University and neighbouring communities.

One hundred and seven (107) researchers patronized the American Corner in the week under review. They were from the Faculties of Engineering, Management, SSLT, Basic Medical Science, Education, and Humanities.

  1. The University Librarian, Prof. Helen Emasealu, on Wednesday, 10th July 2024, received thirty-three (33) copies of book donations titled Biological Nomenclature, Species, Concept and Key Construction by B. L. Nyananyo.

The Management of Donald Ekong Library appreciates the donors for the kind gesture and urges other scholars and library patrons to donate books, journals, and audio-visual materials to enrich the resources of the Library and promote further research

  1. The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduates) and the Research Commons (for postgraduates) sections on the first floor of the Library are open to those who wish to access the Library’s electronic resources using the ICT facilities in the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is open to faculty members.
  2. The Library has received an update on proceedings with its Science Direct Database. https://www.sciencedirect.com The database provides researchers and registered library users with information resources for scientific, technical, and medical research. It offers full-text journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and 11,000 books.
  3. The Library has received an update on its OnePetro Database with the new content. https://onepetro.org/journals. The database provides registered Faculty members and researchers with information on the oil and gas exploration and production industry.
  4. The Library has received an update on its HS Talks Database with new content: https://hstalks.com/. The database provides registered faculty members and researchers multimedia materials ranging from videos, audio, and animated audio-visual lectures centered on biomedical and life sciences and the business and management disciplines.
  5. The Library has acquired the ProQuest electronic database. ProQuest powers research with unique content in academic, corporate, government, public, and school libraries worldwide. The database is accessible through the electronic database on the Library website. Users may visit the Library for access details.
  6. In addition to other electronic resources on the Library website, the Library has added MatLab. The MATrics Laboratory (MatLab) is a proprietary multi-paradigm programming language and numeric computing environment that shows Matric manipulating, plotting functions-abc data, implementing algorithms, creating user interfaces, and interacting with programs written in other languages.
For library users, MATLAB can be incredibly useful in several ways:

Academic Research: MATLAB provides powerful tools for data analysis, simulation, and modeling, aiding in various research projects across disciplines.
Coursework and Assignments: Students can use MATLAB for solving complex mathematical problems, visualizing data, and completing assignments in subjects like engineering, physics, and computer science.
Learning and Skill Development: By using MATLAB, users can develop valuable programming and analytical skills, which are highly sought after in many technical fields.
Resource Access: The library’s MATLAB resources, including toolboxes and additional documentation, offer comprehensive support for users to maximize their learning and research potential.

NOTE: The MatLab license is an online institutional license that is Internet Protocol (IP) bound. Therefore, users must connect through the library, ACEFOR, or ICTC provided internet network to use the MatLab.

    To access MatLab:
