DONALD EKONG LIBRARY BI-WEEKLY REPORT
Monday 27th November – Friday 8th December 2023

  1. From Monday, November 27th, to Friday, December 1st, 2023, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, organized the following programs;

Program 1: Employability webinar. TitledFrom Beats to Bank: Unveiling untapped avenues for youth to monetize music in Nigeria.” The webinar provided a comprehensive guide for young musicians in Nigeria not only to understand the industry but also to monetize their musical talents strategically.

Program 2: Entrepreneurship Essentials: Navigating the Faith to Successful Business Start-Up. The program focused on ways to start a business as an entrepreneur and the guiding principles of a successful business.

Program 3: EducationUSA Orientation program. The program provided valuable insights and guidance to participants interested in pursuing educational opportunities in the United States of America.

One Hundred and Ninety-Four (194) participants attended the three programmes from the Faculty of Education, Science, Management Sciences, and School of Science Laboratory Technology.

 

  1. From Monday 4th to Friday 8th December 2023, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, organized four programs:

1st Program: Building. Getting Started with CLOUD COMPUTING 1& 2: This program gave participants background knowledge about where servers and software are hosted locally in a dynamic environment. The program ended with a question-andanswer session for the participants’ comprehensive understanding of the topic.

2nd Program: Educational USA Orientation 1: The program provided participants with admission opportunities into postgraduate programs and scholarships in the United States of America.

3rd Program: Youth Development: Entrepreneurship Essentials. The program provided participants with a unique insight into unlocking the landscape of innovation and growth in business.

One hundred and eighty-three(183) participants attended the four (4) programmes. They were from the Faculties of Engineering, Social Sciences, Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Management Science, and Education.

 

  1. On Monday, November 27th, 2023, The University Librarian, Dr. Helen Emasealu, acquired fourteen (14) new book collections for the Department of Food Science and Nutrition programmes for library retention.

  1. From Tuesday, November 28th to Friday, December 1st, 2023, the University Librarian, Dr. Helen Emasealu, received NUC accreditation teams to accredit programs in the Department of Public Administration, Geography, Home Science and Food Science & Nutrition. The Library’s 21st-century collections and overall operation/ usage impressed the team. 
  1. The University Librarian, Dr. Helen Emasealu, On Friday, December 1st, 2023, received the Nigerian Library Association (NLA) President, Mr. Dominic Omokaro, whom his Rivers State Chapter Executives accompanied on a courtesy visit. 
  1. On Monday, December 4th, 2023, The University Librarian, Dr. Helen U. Emasealu, received the accreditation team who visited to accredit the Department of Geology programme. The team was impressed with the Library’s physical collections and the up-to-date electronic resources used in teaching, learning, and research.  
  1. The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduates) and the Research Commons (for postgraduates) sections on the first floor of the Library are open to those who wish to access the Library’s electronic resources using the ICT facilities (Computers and Internet) in the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is open to faculty members.
  1. From Monday, November 27th, to Friday, December 1st, The Library received an update on its EBSCO Host Database, https://search.ebscohost.com/Login.aspx. This database provides registered faculty members and researchers with high-quality articles licensed from reputable publishers recognized by Library professionals chosen to meet researchers’ science and technology needs.
  1. From Monday, November 27th, to Friday, December 1st, weekly statistics of Donald Ekong Library patronage showed a 117% increase from 1957 users in the previous week to 4,254 in the current week.
  1. From Monday, December 4th, to Friday, December 8th, the Library received an update on its JSTOR Database: https://www.jstor.org/. The database provides registered faculty members and researchers with information materials across different disciplines, from sciences and social sciences to arts, education, technology, law, and other research-related disciplines.
  1. From Monday, December 4th, to Friday, December 8th, weekly statistics of the patronage of Donald Ekong Library showed a 12.5% increase from 4,254 users in the previous week to 4,784 users in the current week. The University Librarian wishes all students the best in their second-semester exams.
