DONALD EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT
Monday 1st – Friday 5th July 2024

  1. On Tuesday, 2nd July 2024, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, organized two programs:
    1st Program: Making Your Career and Product Visible: This program introduced participants to strategic efforts and actions to enhance the visibility and recognition of their professional achievements, skills, and products within the industry or market. This involves using various platforms, networks, and marketing techniques to ensure their career and products stand out, attract attention, and are accessible to the target audience.
    2nd Program: Education-USA Orientation: The program aims to offer quality information on tertiary education opportunities, valuable insights, and guidance to participants interested in pursuing educational opportunities in the United States of America.
  1. One-hundred and six (106) researchers patronized the American Corner in the week under review. They were from the Departments of English Studies, Economics, Microbiology, Library and Information Science, Nursing, Anatomy, Medicine and Surgery, Fine Arts and Design, Sociology, Music, and Accounting.
  2. The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduates) and the Research Commons (for postgraduates) sections on the first floor of the Library are open to those who wish to access the Library’s electronic resources using the ICT facilities in the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is open to faculty members.
  3. The Library has received an update on the proceedings on its Science Direct Database: https://www.sciencedirect.com. The database provides researchers and registered library users with scientific, technical, and medical research information. It offers full-text journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and 11,000 books. 5. The Library has received an update on its OnePetro Database with the new content: https://onepetro.org/journals. The database provides registered Faculty members and researchers with information on oil and gas exploration and the production industry.
  1. The Library has received an update on its HS Talks Database with new content: https://hstalks.com/. The database provides registered faculty members and researchers multimedia materials ranging from videos, audio, and animated audio-visual lectures centered on biomedical and life sciences and the business and management disciplines.
  1. In addition to other electronic resources on the Library website, the Library has added MatLab. The MATrics Laboratory (MatLab) is a proprietary multi-paradigm programming language and numeric computing environment that shows Matric manipulating, plotting functions-abc data, implementing algorithms, creating user interfaces, and interacting with programs written in other languages.
  1. Weekly statistics of the patronage of Donald Ekong Library showed an 8.7% increase from two thousand nine hundred and ninety-six users (2,996) in the previous week to three thousand two hundred and fifty-nine (3,259) users in the current week. This upward trend reflects the Library’s ongoing efforts to enhance its services and engage with the community effectively.

Supplementary Information: For a real-time response to information about the Library and its collections, library users can access the virtual librarian chatbot on the Library’s website: cs https://library.uniport.edu.ng/. The library is a veritable source of knowledge. Therefore, staff and students are encouraged to seek knowledge regularly using Donald Ekong Library learning resources.
