26th August – 6th September 2024
During the two weeks under review, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, anchored five (5) programs to enhance patrons’ knowledge of the resources available at American Corner, providing educational opportunities and supporting digital business development.
1st Program: “Navigating the Legal Landscape of YouTube: Protecting your Channel and Content:
On Tuesday, 27th of August, 2024, a MOOC Camp program on the above title was held. The program highlighted the legal challenges of running a YouTube Channel, including copyright issues, fair use, and content protection strategies. The program attracted the attendance of content creators and aspiring digital entrepreneurs keen to safeguard their content and avoid legal issues.
2nd Program: Education-USA Orientation Program:
On Wednesday, 28th of August, 2024, the second program was hosted to provide comprehensive, accurate, and current information to students on the modalities of applying for further studies in United States of America (USA) Colleges and Universities. The program covered vital areas such as choosing the right college, understanding the application process, and preparing for standardized tests. Other key areas were also covered, such as visa application procedures and information on securing student visas. The attendees had a field day as they were excited and satisfied with the knowledge acquired during the program.
3rd Program: “Speak with a Diplomat: Road to a Diplomat”
On Thursday, 29th of August 2024, The American Corner organized this program, which students from different Departments of the host University, the University of Port Harcourt, attended. It was an interactive session that allowed the participants to engage with a seasoned diplomat who shared insights on a career in diplomacy. The students aspiring to pursue a career path in diplomacy benefitted from the program.
4th Program: Getting Started with YouTube Business: Ideating-Bringing Your Ideas to Life.
On Tuesday, 3rd of September, 2024, The American Corner organized a program captioned “Getting Started with YouTube Business: Ideating-Bringing Your Ideas to Life.” The program recorded impressive participation of students from the University and the neighbouring communities. The program focused on Ideating and utilizing YouTube to create business opportunities.
5th Program: Education-USA Orientation Programme
The weekly Education-USA Orientation program, which emphasizes undergraduate and postgraduate admission processes and scholarship opportunities in the United States, was held on Wednesday, 4th of September, 2024. The program was well attended by students interested in furthering their education in the United States of America.
Programme Attendance Statistics:
During the two weeks, three hundred and eighteen (318) students and researchers participated in various programs and research activities at the American Corner, Port Harcourt.
Book Donations:
On Wednesday, 4th September & Friday, 6th September 2024, the University Librarian’s office received several book donations:
- Three Decades of Ghalib Chambers from Yusuf O. Ali
- Law of Academic Excellence from Stechi Eli.
- Practical Steps to Start, Grow, and Scale Your Business (5 copies) from the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Georgewill Owunari.
- The Transformation of Katsina 1400-1883 from Dr. Yusufu Bala Usman.
The Management of Donald E.U Ekong Library greatly appreciates the kind gesture of the donors and urges scholars and researchers to donate books, journals, and non-book materials to enrich the library resources and encourage further research.
Library Weekly Attendance Statistics:
From 26th August – 30th August 2024, the week indicates a decrease of 2.6% in patronage from the previous week’s record of three thousand, three hundred and twenty-five (3,325) to three thousand, two hundred and forty (3,240) recorded in the current week. From 2nd September – 6th September 2024, there was an increase of 9.8% in patronage from last week’s three thousand, two hundred and forty (3,240) to the current week’s three thousand, five hundred and fifty-six (3,556).
Library Duty Shifts:
Donald E.U. Ekong Library (the Central Library) maintained two shifts from 8.00 a.m. – 9.00 p.m. on weekdays and 9.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays.
New Acquisitions and Updates:
The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduate students) and the Research Commons (for Post-graduate students) are accessible to students and researchers who wish to utilize the e-resources of the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the Library’s second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is accessible to faculty members.
The library has acquired MatLab. The MaTrics Laboratory (MatLab) is a proprietary multi-paradigm programming language and numeric computing environment that indicates matric manipulating and plotting functions-abc data, implementing algorithms, creating users, and interacting with programs written in other languages.
The Library has also benefitted immensely from the updated content of the AJOL database. https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ajol. This data is regarded as one of the world’s largest databases housing peer-viewed African-published scholarly works in various disciplines for registered researchers and staff.
Donald E.U. Ekong Library has received updated content in the OnePro database. https://onepetro.org/journals. This database furnishes registered researchers and faculty members with information on the oil and gas exploration and production industry.
The Library has received an update of its Scopus Database with the new content.
https://www.scopus.com/home.uri . This database provides registered faculty members and researchers with the most extensive abstracts and cited databases on peer-reviewed literature and information materials across disciplines.
Donald E.U. Ekong Library has also benefitted immensely from the updated content on the AJOL database. https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ajol. This data is credited as one of the world’s largest databases housing peer-viewed African-published scholarly works in various disciplines for registered researchers and staff.
The Library has received updated content on the AGORA database. https://www.fao.org/agora/en/. This database furnishes registered researchers and staff with information materials, journals, audiovisual materials, and other collections centred on agriculture and its related disciplines.
The library has also received updated content on the BioOne database. https://bioone.org/. This database provides registered researchers and staff with information materials, journals, and multimedia collections related to biological sciences and their disciplines.

Donald E. U. Ekong Library is rich in physical and digital resources that can benefit students, staff, and other researchers within the University community and beyond. Therefore, staff and students are advised to take advantage of the services rendered in the Library by staff committed to discharging their responsibilities with a touch of excellence.
