DONALD E.U. EKONG LIBRARY COMBINED WEEKLY REPORT 3RD – 21ST AUGUST, 2026

3rd – 7th August 2026

1. On Monday, 3rd August 2026, the Information Services Unit commenced a three-day In-House Training for Cataloguers at the Elsevier Training Room, which continued through Wednesday, 5th August 2026. The training covered descriptive cataloguing, subject headings, classification, Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in cataloguing, and bibliographic database searching. Participants received hands-on training in RDA, MARC 21, LCSH, LCC, and effective database search techniques. The workshop strengthened participants’ competencies in modern cataloguing practices and emphasized the importance of continuous professional development and responsible AI use.
2. On Wednesday, 5th August 2026, the office of the University Librarian received a copy of a book from Dr. Abdulkarim Jibril:

3. On Thursday, 6th August 2026, the office of the University Librarian received 29 copies of Inaugural and Valedictory Lecture Series from the Director of Academic Affairs, University of Port Harcourt. The series are as follows:

5. Dr. Sotonye Orji was appointed an ORCID–WACA Ambassador by the West and Central African Research and Education Network (WACREN). The appointment aims to promote awareness and adoption of ORCID in research and academic institutions across West and Central Africa.
6. During the week, the Donald E. U. Ekong Library also acquired daily issues of national newspapers to keep staff and students informed on local and global events. Titles received include: The Guardian, Daily Sun, Punch, Vanguard, Telegraph, Business Day, and This Day. These issues were made available at the Reference Unit.
7. The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduate students) and the Research Commons (for postgraduate students) are accessible to students and researchers who wish to utilize the e-resources of the library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory, located on the second floor of the library, offers internet access to all subscribed databases and is accessible to faculty members.
8. The library has acquired MATLAB. MATLAB (MatLab) is a proprietary multi-paradigm programming language and numeric computing environment that includes matrix manipulation and plotting functions, data analysis, algorithm implementation, user interface creation, and interaction with programs written in other languages.
9. The weekly statistics indicated a 20.58% decrease in patronage, with the number of users decreasing from 3,093 in the previous week to 2,758 in the current week.
10. The Library has received updated content in the SpringerLink Database (https://www.springernature.com/gp). This database helps publish robust and insightful research, supports the development of novel areas of knowledge, and makes information accessible globally.
11. The Library is receiving updated content on the JSTOR Database (https://www.jstor.org). This database provides registered researchers with informative materials spanning the sciences, social sciences, arts, education, technology, law, and other research-related disciplines.
12. The library has received updated content on the AGORA database (https://www.fao.org/agora/en/). This database provides registered researchers and staff with information materials, journals, audiovisual materials, and other collections focused on agriculture and related disciplines.
13. The Library has received an update of its Scopus Database (https://www.scopus.com/home.uri). This database provides registered faculty members and researchers with the most extensive database of abstracts and cited references for peer-reviewed literature and information materials across disciplines.
