DONALD E.U. EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT
Monday 19th – Friday 23rd 2024

  1. During the week under review, the Library received one hundred fifteen (115) students from the Faculties of Education, Engineering, and Law. Dr. Glory Edet and some circulation staff received the students. They were guided around the library facilities and intimated on the services rendered in the various library units.
  2. On the 19th of August, 2024, American Corner, Port Harcourt, hosted the August MOOC Camp programme titled: ‘Digital Tools for Academic Success’. The programme, which allowed the attendees to learn how to utilize digital tools such as ChatGPT, Aithor, Grammarly, Quillbot, Question AI, and Ino-Reader in academic research, was facilitated by Mr. Stanislaus N. Ezeonye. Students from Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education in Rivers State and beyond attended the programme.
  1. On the 20th of August, 2024, the August MOOC Camp programme continued with practical sessions. The participants were guided on the practical application of digital tools. Notable among the participants were students from Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, and the University of Port Harcourt. The sessions recorded an impressive attendance. On the 21st of August, 2024, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, anchored the Education-USA Orientation programme. The resource person emphasized the processes involved in securing scholarships and other opportunities in the United States. Participation was drawn from various faculties at the host university (University of Port Harcourt) and external organizations.
  2. In the week under review, two hundred and twenty-six (226) participants attended the programmes anchored by American Corner, Port Harcourt.
  3. The weekly statistics on the patronage of the Library show an increase of 10.2% from three thousand and eighteen (3,018) users recorded in the week before to three thousand three hundred and twenty-five (3,325) recorded in the current week.
  4. Donald E.U. Ekong Library, the Central Library, maintains two shifts from 8.00 a.m. – 9.00 p.m. on weekdays and 9.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays.
  5. The Library has received updated content on the AGORA database. https://www.fao.org/agora/en/. This database furnishes registered researchers, including staff, with information materials, journals, audiovisual materials, and other collections centred on agriculture and its related disciplines.
  6. The Library has also received updated content on the BioOne database. https://bioone.org/. This database provides registered researchers at the Library, including staff, with information materials, journals, and multimedia collections related to biological sciences and their disciplines.
  7. The Library has also benefitted immensely from the updated contents of the AJOL database. https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ajol. This database is credited as one of the world’s largest databases housing peer-viewed African-published scholarly works in various disciplines for researchers registered at the Library.
  8. The Library has acquired MatLab. The MaTrics Laboratory (MatLab) is a proprietary multiparadigm programming language and numeric computing environment that indicates matric manipulating and plotting functions-abc data, implementing algorithms, creating users, and interacting with programs written in other languages.
  9. The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduate students) and the Research Commons (for postgraduate students) are open to students and other researchers who wish to access the library’s e-resources. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the Library’s second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is accessible to faculty members.
