DONALD E.U. EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT

  1. On Friday, 27th September, the office of the University Librarian took delivery of 2 copies of The Noble, the University Demonstration Secondary School Graduation Year Book, from the school authorities. A copy of Journal of Asian and African Studies No. 99 March 2020, Imagined Tale from South Eastern Nigeria, and Final African Papers were received from Simon Ottenberg by post. Similarly, the Head of the Medical Library, Mr. Ugwulebo Jeremiah, received an anonymous donation of eighteen books to the Medical Library on 20th September 2024 on behalf of the University Librarian. The books are as follows:

  1. On Thursday, 26th September 2024, America Spaces Nigeria organized the first programme, ‘Speak with A Diplomat,’ to mark National Hispanic Heritage Month. The programme benefitted students aspiring to pursue a career path in diplomacy. Students from different Faculties of the University of Port Harcourt and other tertiary institutions in Rivers State graced the programme.
  2. Africa Centre of Excellence for Public Health and Toxicological Research (ACE-PUTOR), under the leadership of the Centre Leader, Prof. Daprim Ogaji, has provided internet connectivity in the Medical Library for users and internet-related services. The Management and staff of the University Library, led by the University Librarian, Prof. Helen U. Emasealu, are grateful to ACE-PUTOR, especially as this gesture contributes significantly to the University Librarian’s library service revitalization initiative. Other Centres and Faculties are requested to follow the example of ACE-PUTOR and support Donald E.U. Ekong Library to promote research and learning and make NUC accreditation exercises seamless. The University Librarian is encouraging library patrons to take advantage of the provision of internet connectivity in the Medical Library to access subscribed databases for their research and learning.
  3. A total of one hundred and twenty-three (123) researchers and students utilized the resources in the American Corner, Port Harcourt, in the week under review.
  4. The weekly statistics of library patronage show a significant increase of 87.7% from three thousand, two hundred and ninety-two (3,292) recorded in the previous week to six thousand, one hundred and ninety (6,190) recorded in the current week.
  5. The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduate students) and the Research Commons (for Postgraduate students) are open to students and researchers who wish to access the library’s eresources. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the second floor of the Library, which has internet access to all subscribed databases, is accessible to faculty members.
  6. The Central Library (Donald E. U Ekong Library) maintains two shifts: 8.00 a.m. – 9.00 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The Medical Library now offers weekend reading services on Saturdays from 9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.
  7. The Library has acquired MatLab. The MaTrics Laboratory (MatLab) is a proprietary multiparadigm programming language and numeric computing environment that indicates matric manipulating and plotting functions-abc data, implementing algorithms, creating users, and interacting with programmes written in other languages.
  8. The Library has also greatly benefited from the updated contents of the AJOL database: https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ajol. This database is credited as one of the world’s most extensive databases housing peer-viewed African-published scholarly works in various disciplines for registered researchers and staff.
  9. The Library            has       received       updated           content            from    the AGORA       database: https://www.fao.org/agora/en/. This database furnishes registered researchers and staff with information materials, journals, audiovisual materials, and other collections centred on agriculture and its related disciplines.
  10. The Library has also received updated content on the BioOne database. https://bioone.org/. This database provides registered researchers and staff with information materials, journals, and multi-media collections that are related to biological sciences and their related disciplines

Donald E. U. Ekong Library is rich in physical and digital resources that can benefit students, researchers, and staff within the university community and beyond. Therefore, staff and students are advised to take advantage of the services rendered in the Library by staff committed to discharging their responsibilities with a touch of excellence.
