DONALD EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT
Monday 17th – Friday 21st June 2024

(Nota Bene: Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th June 2024 were declared public holidays by the Federal Government of Nigeria to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration)

The American Corner, Port Harcourt, organized two programs on Wednesday, 19th June 2024.

  1. 1st Program: Education-USA The program provided information to participants on undergraduate and postgraduate admission processes and scholarship opportunities in the United States of America. The program attracted participants from the University and neighbouring communities.
  2. 2nd Program: Youth Empowerment: Leveraging Collaboration and Tech in Fashion Business. The program provided young individuals with the skills, opportunities, and support necessary to become active and influential participants in communities and industries. The program enhanced the participants’ capabilities, built their confidence, and fostered a sense of responsibility and ownership.
  3. Ninety-two (92) researchers patronized the American Corner in the week under review. They were from the Faculties of Engineering, Management, SSLT, Basic Medical Science, Education, and Humanities.
  4. On Thursday, June 20th 2024, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Owunari A. Georgewill, visited the Library to inspect the renovated office of the University Librarian. He was received by the University Librarian, Prof. Helen Emasealu, and her team.
  5. The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduates) and the Research Commons (for postgraduates) sections on the first floor of the Library are open to those who wish to access the Library’s electronic resources using the ICT facilities in the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is open to faculty members.
  6. The Library has received an update on its Science Direct Database, https://www.sciencedirect.com. The database provides researchers and registered library users with scientific, technical, and medical research information. It offers full-text journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and 11,000 books. 7. The Library has received an update on its OnePetro Database, https://onepetro.org/journals. The database provides registered Faculty members and researchers with information on the oil and gas exploration and production industry.
  7. The Library has received an update on its HS Talks Database: https://hstalks.com/. The database provides registered faculty members and researchers multimedia materials ranging from videos, audio, and animated audio-visual lectures centered on biomedical and life sciences and the business and management disciplines.
  8. Weekly statistics of the patronage of Donald Ekong Library showed a 48% decrease from one thousand nine hundred forty-four users (1,944) in the previous week to 992 users in the current week. This decrease can be attributed to the public holidays the Federal Government of Nigeria declared to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha.
  9. During the week under review, Donald Ekong Library maintained two shifts to ensure effective service delivery to all patrons.
