DONALD EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT
Monday 13th – Friday 17th May 2024
and Monday 20th – Friday 24th May 2024

On Wednesday, 15th May 2024, and on Wednesday, 22nd May 2024, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, organized four programs.

1st Program: Education USA Program: The program provided information to participants on undergraduate and postgraduate admission processes and scholarship opportunities in the United States of America. The program attracted participants from the University and neighbouring communities.

2nd Program: Youth Participation in Community Development: A Gateway to Self -Development: The program provided participants with opportunities to connect with mentors and professionals to expand their professional network. These programs enhanced the participants’ lives and contributed significantly to their communities’ betterment.

3rd Program: Employability Webinar: A Break Dance:  The program offered participants a dynamic and engaging approach to career development, demonstrating how the discipline and creativity of breakdancing can translate into valuable employability skills. Participants also explored how breakdancing formed an artistic expression and physical activity, teaching valuable skills such as creativity, discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and insights that can boost their career prospects.

4th Program: The Education – USA program: The program provided information to participants on undergraduate and postgraduate admission processes and scholarship opportunities in the United States of America.

Three Hundred and Seventy (317) researchers patronized the American Corner in the weeks under review. They were from the Faculties of Engineering, Sciences, Media and Communication Studies, Computing, Education, Humanities, Law, Social Science and Basic Medical Sciences.

On Thursday, 23rd May 2024, The University Librarian, Prof. Helen U. Emasealu, received the following book donations for library retention.

  • Kalabari Temetein Ekwen (Kalabari Poems) by Nimi Wariboko (3) copies.
  • My Odyssey and the Colour now is Green. 29th Valedictory Lecture delivered on 22nd April 2024 by Prof. Gloria Ukalina Obuzor, Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, University of Port Harcourt. (3 copies)
  • Walking in His Steps: The Stewardship of a Prosthodontist. An Inaugural lecture was delivered on 25 January 2024 by Prof. Abiodun Olabisi, Department of Restorative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, University of Port Harcourt. (3 copies)
  • TwentyFirstCenturyUniversityAdministratorinManagingHigherEducationasan Enterprise. An Inaugural lecture delivered on 25th April 2024 by Prof. Chineze M. Uche of the Department of Educational Management, University of Port Harcourt. (3 copies)
  • Crises in Nigeria’s Federal Universities: Is Cash the Culprit? The 27th Valedictory lecture delivered on 23rd August 2023 by Prof. Prince C. Nwakanma of the Department of Finance and Banking, University of Port Harcourt. (3 copies)
  • Nigeria: The Burden of Diversity. An Inaugural lecture delivered on 28th March 2024 by Prof. Nekabari J. Nna of the Department of Political and Administrative Studies, University of Port Harcourt. (3 copies)
  • Anatomy of Ageing: Temporality and Transcendence. A Valedictory lecture delivered on the 29th of January 2024 by Prof. Frank A.O. Ugiomoh. (3 copies)
  • Niger Delta Prehistoric Studies: The Motivational Superb Gains from the Odinani NonScript Sources. An Inaugural lecture delivered on the 29th of February 2024 by Prof. Stanley I. Okoroafor of the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies, University of Port Harcourt. (3 copies)
  • EngineeringEconomicDevelopmentinNigeria:EfficacyofPublicSpending. An Inaugural lecture delivered on the 4th of April 2024 by Prof. Godly Otto of the Department of Economics, University of Port Harcourt. (3 copies)
  • The Creative Force and Artistic Creativity: From the Garden of Eden to the Garden City of Port Harcourt. An Inaugural lecture delivered on the 15th of February by Prof. Julie Nwabogo E. Umukoro, Department of Theatre and Film Studies, University of Port Harcourt. (3 copies)

The management of Donald Ekong Library appreciates the donors for the kind gesture and urges other scholars and patrons to donate books, journals, and audio-visual materials to enrich the library’s resources and promote further research.

The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduates) and the Research Commons (for postgraduates) sections on the first floor of the Library are open to those who wish to access the Library’s electronic resources using the ICT facilities in the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is open to faculty members.

The Library has received an update on proceedings in its Science Direct Database. https://www.sciencedirect.com The database provides researchers and registered library users with information resources for scientific, technical, and medical research. It offers full-text journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and 11,000 books.

The Library has received the update of its Springer Link Database with the new content. https://www.springernature.com/g The database provides registered faculty members and researchers with millions of journals, books, works, and proceedings for all disciplines.

The Library has received an update of its OnePetro Database with the new content. https://onepetro.org/journals. The database provides registered Faculty members and researchers with information on the oil and gas exploration and production industry.

The Library has received an update of its HS Talks Database with new content, https://hstalks.com/. The database provides registered faculty members and researchers multimedia materials ranging from videos, audio, and animated audiovisual lectures centered on biomedical and life sciences and the business and management disciplines.

Bi-weekly statistics of the patronage of Donald Ekong Library showed a 22% increase from 9,927 users in the previous week to 12,206 users from Monday 13th – Friday 17th May 2024. This was followed by a 22% decrease from 12,206 users from Monday 13th – Friday 17th May 2024 to 9,400 users from Monday 20th – Friday 24th May 2024.
