DONALD EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT
Monday 29th – Friday 3rd May 2024 

  1. On Monday, 29th April 2024, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, organized four programs:
      • 1st Program: Employability Webinar: Career Opportunities for Youths on Becoming an Editorial Cartoonist. This program introduced participants to editorial cartooning, which involves creating cartoons that convey political, social, and cultural commentary. It also explored the historical background of editorial cartoons and their significance in media and society.
      • 2nd Program: Jazz Revolution: Empowering Diversity and Freedom of Expression: The program provided participants with the transformative power of jazz music in promoting diversity and fostering freedom of expression. It showcased how jazz transcended cultural boundaries, empowered individuals to express themselves creatively, and contributed to positive social change.
      • 3rd Program: Education-USA Orientation: The program aims to offer quality information on tertiary education opportunities, valuable insights, and guidance to participants interested in pursuing educational opportunities in the United States of America.
      • 4th Program: World Press Day: A Press for the Planet of Journalism in the face of Environmental Crisis: World Press Day is a global observance that celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom, journalism ethics, and the role of media in society. The program also equipped participants with the importance of press freedom as a cornerstone of democracy and the responsibility of journalists to report truthfully and ethically on environmental issues.
  1. One hundred and Ninety-five (195) researchers patronized the American Corner in the week under review. They were from the Department of English Studies, Economics, Microbiology, Library Information Science, Nursing, Anatomy, Medicine and Surgery, Fine Arts and Design, Sociology, Music, and Accounting. 
  1. The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduates) and the Research Commons (for postgraduates) sections on the first floor of the Library are open to those who wish to access the Library’s electronic resources using the ICT facilities in the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is open to faculty members.
  1. The Library has received an update on its Science Direct Database. https://www.sciencedirect.com. The database provides researchers and registered library users with scientific, technical, and medical research information. It offers full-text journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and 11,000 books.
  1. The library has received an update of its OnePetro Database with the new content. https://onepetro.org/journals. The database provides registered Faculty members and researchers with information on the oil and gas exploration and production industry.
  2. The Library has received an update on its HS Talks Database with new content:

https://hstalks.com/. The database provides registered faculty members and researchers multimedia materials ranging from videos, audio, and animated audio-visual lectures centered on biomedical and life sciences and the business and management disciplines.

 

  1. Weekly statistics of the patronage of Donald Ekong Library showed a 2% decrease from seven thousand six hundred and seventy-three users (7,673) in the previous week to 6,651 users in the current week.

Conclusion: For a real-time response to information about the Library and its collections, library users can access the virtual librarian chatbot on the library’s website, which is as follows: https://library.uniport.edu.ng/.
