- On Monday, 10th March 2025, the office of the University Librarian received the accreditation team from the National Universities Commission (NUC), led by Prof. Mohammed Yahuza Bello, for the resource verification of the Master’s programme in Embedded Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering domiciled in the Centre for Information and Telecommunication Engineering (CITE) of the University.
- On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the office of the University Librarian received ten (10) copies of a report publication of the United States Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria from the Deputy Director of American Corner Port Harcourt, Mr. Stanislaus Ezeonye, and two (2) copies of a book from National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) University of Port Harcourt Branch. The books are as follows:
- United States Mission (2024). Report to the Nigerian people.
- National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) (2022). Tropical Journey of Engineering, Science and Technology, 1:182, Nigeria.
- On Thursday, March 13, 2025, the University Librarian’s office received 4 copies of a book donated by Miss. Oluwasefunmi Eunice Bamidele, a Pharmacy student, and 2 copies from Dr. Dorcas Otto. The books are as follows:
- Bamidele, O. E. (2025). Living Your Best Life. Nigeria: Viewpoint Publications Limited.
- Otto, D. (2024). Statutory Academic Ceremonies and Events: A Guide for Nigerian Universities. Nigeria: University of Port Harcourt Press Limited.
- During the week, Donald E. U. Ekong Library acquire daily issues of the following newspapers to enable staff and students of the University to stay up-to-date on local and global news: Telegraph, Daily Sun, The Nation, Punch, Vanguard, Business Day, and ThisDay. The current daily issues are made available at the Documents Units of the Library for those who wish to access them.
- The American Corner, Port Harcourt, hosted programmes that engage, empower and enlighten the members of the University community. Staff and students are encouraged to register with the American Corner @ http://forms.gle/fNmcMpyXqw7jULpa7 to benefit from these progrmmes. Registrants are requested to visit the American Corner after the registration for onboarding. Registration is FREE.
- The American Corner, Port Harcourt, hosted the Education-USA programme on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The programme had 30 participants in attendance.
- The American Corner, Port Harcourt, has acquired Chat Generative Predictive Text (ChatGPT) Artificial Intelligence. This AI is free for users at the American Corner, Port Harcourt (AC-PHC).
- The ‘Opportunity Fund Scheme’ from the American Consulate funding scheme for academically outstanding indigent students is still available. The registration is available @ https://opportunityfundsnigeria.org. The fund covers upfront application, test, and admission fees.
- The American Corner, Port Harcourt, will host the Education-USA programme on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. University staff and students are encouraged to attend.
- American Corner, Port Harcourt, had three hundred and twenty-one (321) users in the week under review. This is against the two hundred and forty-nine users recorded in the previous week, which indicates a 28.93% increase in patronage.
- The E-Library-USA databases are available for users, providing remote access to JSTOR, ProQuest, PressReader, Libby App, BookFlix, and Kanopy. Users are encouraged to register at American Corner, Port Harcourt, for guidance on remote access registration.
- On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, one thousand, one hundred and twenty-four (1,124) students from the Faculties of Science and Agriculture visited Donald E.U. Ekong Library for the Year-One Library Orientation/Practical. The students were taken on a guided tour of the various sections/units of the Library and enlightened on the available resources and facilities by the Head of Department, Readers’ Services, Dr. Mary IG-Worlu, Mary, and her team.
- On Friday, March 14, 2025, the Library hosted five hundred and fifty-nine (559) students from the Faculties of Clinical Sciences and Basic Medical Science who came for Year-One Library Orientation/Practical. Dr. Mary IG-Worlu, the Head of Department of Readers’ Services, received the students and engaged them on the rules and regulations of the Library, the dress code, how to navigate the Library, and the importance of availing themselves of the numerous resources in the library.
- The statistics for the week portray a slight increase of 0.42% in library patronage from five thousand, two hundred and one (5,201) recorded in the previous week to five thousand, two hundred and twenty-three (5,223) recorded in the current week.
- Donald E.U Ekong Library maintained two shifts from 8.00 a.m. – 9.00 p.m. on weekdays and 9.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays.
- The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduate students) and the Research Commons (for Postgraduate students) are accessible to students and researchers who wish to utilize the e-resources of the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the second floor of the Library has internet access to all subscribed databases and is accessible to faculty members.
- The library has received updated content in the OnePro database https://onepetro.org/journals. This database furnishes registered researchers and faculty members with information on the oil and gas exploration and production industry.
- The Library has received an update of its Scopus Database with the new content
https://www.scopus.com/home.uri . This database provides registered faculty members and researchers with the most extensive abstracts and cited databases on peer-reviewed literature and information materials across disciplines.
- The Library has received updated content on the AGORA database https://www.fao.org/agora/en/. This database furnishes registered researchers and staff with information materials, journals, audio-visual materials, and other collections centred on agriculture and its related disciplines.
