DONALD E.U. EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT
28th October – 1st November & 4th – 8th November 2024
- On Wednesday, 30th October 2024, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, hosted the weekly Education-USA Orientation Programme, specially designed as an enlightenment program to inform patrons about opportunities in the United States concerning scholarship and emigration.
- On Tuesday, 5th November 2024, American Corner hosted a program titled Young Lawyers for Climate Justice: Defend, Advocate, Empower and Sustain. The International Climate Change Development Initiative Group organized the program. Students from the Faculty of Law attended the program.
- On Thursday, 7th November 2024, American Corner hosted another program titled Leadership, Institutions and Nation Building: Challenges and Prospects for Nigeria. The program was held under the auspices of the Fulbright Alumni Association of Nigeria. The Fulbright members and students from various secondary schools, UPWA, UDSS, Olobo Premier College, and Adorable Kids Academy, graced the occasion.
- On Thursday, 7th November 2024, members of the Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt, led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwo, and other Principal Officers of the University, paid a familiarization visit to Donald E. U. Ekong Library. The University Librarian, Professor Helen Emasealu, received the visitors. She furnished them with information on the achievements and challenges of the Library.
- The weekly statistics show a decline of 80% from three thousand, eight hundred and seventy-three (3,873) recorded in the penultimate week to seven hundred and seventy-four (774) recorded in the current week. The decrease in patronage is because of the closure of academic activities, as the Management of the University of Port Harcourt announced.
- The Central Library (Donald E.U Ekong Library) maintained two shifts from 8.00 a.m. – 9.00 p.m. on weekdays and 9.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays.
- The Library has received updated content on the AGORA database. https://www.fao.org/agora/en/. This database furnishes registered researchers and staff with information materials, journals, audio-visual materials, and other collections centred on agriculture and its related disciplines.
- The Library has received updated content on the BioOne database. https://bioone.org/. This database provides registered researchers and staff with information materials, journals, and multimedia collections on the biological sciences and related disciplines.
- The Library has also benefitted immensely from the updated content of the AJOL database. https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ajol. This data is credited as one of the world’s largest databases housing peer-viewed African-published scholarly works in various disciplines.
- The Library has acquired MatLab. The MaTrics Laboratory (MatLab) is a proprietary multi-paradigm programming language and numeric computing environment that indicates matric manipulating and plotting functions-abc data, implementing algorithms, creating user, and interacting with programs written in other languages.
- The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduate students) and the Research Commons (for Postgraduate students) are open to students and researchers who wish to access the Library’s e-resources. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the Library’s second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is accessible to faculty members.
