DONALD E.U. EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT 1st – 4th SEPTEMBER 2025
- The University of Port Harcourt Bookshop is operational at the Donald E.U. Ekong Library. It provides students, staff, and the broader university community with access to affordable textbooks, study resources, and stationery. Additionally, the Library has a modern e-conference room with a seating capacity of 30, complemented by three adjoining This facility, which is available on request, is well-suited for committee meetings, project defence, workshops, and seminars.
- During the week, the Donald U. Ekong Library acquired daily issues of national newspapers to keep staff and students informed about local and global events. The newspaper titles acquired are The Guardian, Daily Sun, Punch, Vanguard, Telegraph, Business Day, and This Day. These issues are available at the Documents Unit and the Library’s newspaper stand.
- The weekly statistics indicated an increase of 2.13% in patronage, with the number of users increasing from 3,478 in the previous week to 3,552 in the current week.
- Donald U. Ekong Library maintained two shifts, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
- The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduates) and the Research Commons (for postgraduate students) are accessible to students and researchers who wish to utilise the e-resources of the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory, located on the second floor of the Library, offers internet access to all subscribed databases and is accessible to faculty members.
- The Library has acquired MatLab. The MaTrics Laboratory (MatLab) is a proprietary multi- paradigm programming language and numeric computing environment that includes matrix manipulating and plotting functions-abc data, implementing algorithms, creating users, and interacting with programmes written in other languages.
- The Library has received updated content from the SpringerLink Database (https://springernature.com/gp). This data helps in the publication of robust and insightful research, supports the development of novel areas of knowledge, and makes information accessible globally.
- The Library has received updated content on the JSTOR Database (https://jstor.org). This database provides registered researchers with informative materials that cut across every discipline, including the sciences, social sciences, arts, education, technology, law, and other research-related disciplines.
- The Library has received updated content on the AGORA database (https://fao.org/agora/en/). This database furnishes registered researchers and staff with information materials, journals, audio-visual materials, and other collections centred on agriculture and its related disciplines.
- The Library has received an update of its Scopus (https://www.scopus.com/home.uri). This database provides registered faculty members and researchers with the most extensive abstracts and cited database on peer-reviewed literature and information materials across disciplines.
- The American Corner Port Harcourt (AC-PHC) hosted the following two programmes:
i. EducationUSA Programme: “5 Essential Steps for Studying in the United States.” This programme was held on Wednesday, 3rd September 2025, and it had 32 participants.
ii. “Workshop series on Reinventing yourself with special theme on Future-Proof Skills for the Digital World.” The programme was held on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, and 54 people
- The American Corner Port Harcourt (AC-PHC) has acquired a subscription to Chat Generative Predictive Text (ChatGPT) Artificial Intelligence. This AI is available for free at the AC-PHC for users.
- The ELibraryUSA databases are available to users, and they provide remote access to JSTOR, ProQuest, PressReader, Libby App, BookFlix, and Users are encouraged to register @ http://bit.lyregister4amspaces.
- In compliance with National Holidays, the American Corner Port Harcourt on Friday, 5th September, 2025, was closed, commemorating with Nigerian Muslims on the birth of the Prophet Muhammad as they observe the Eid-ul-Mawlid.
