DONALD EKONG LIBRARY WEEKLY REPORT
Monday 4th – Friday 8th March 2024

 

  1. From Wednesday 6th to Friday, 8th March 2024, the American Corner, Port Harcourt, organized two (2) programs:
    • 1st Program: Education USA Orientation.
      • During the program, participants were presented with valuable information regarding tertiary education opportunities and admission procedures in the USA. The program focused on equipping attendees with comprehensive knowledge about pursuing higher education in the United States, including the application process, required documentation, and deadlines.
    • 2nd Program: International Women and Girls in Science Day
      • The program served as a significant event aimed at enlightening and empowering women with the objective of recognizing the achievements of women globally and promoting gender equality. Throughout the event, participants were engaged in thought-provoking discussions and interactive sessions focused on addressing challenges faced by women, celebrating their accomplishments, and highlighting the importance of gender parity in all spheres of life. The celebration provided a platform for women to share their experiences, exchange ideas, and foster connections with like-minded individuals.
  1. On Wednesday, 6th March 2024, the University Librarian, Prof. Helen U. Emasealu, received a generous donation consisting of two (2) copies of a book titled “Message for Life and Living in 50 Select Songs” by Sir. Ikoli Harcourt Whyte. The donation was presented to the Library for retention and inclusion in its collection. Prof. Helen U. Emasealu extends her sincere appreciation to Sir. Ikoli Harcourt Whyte for his thoughtful gesture and encourages continued support from other scholars and Library patrons to donate books, journals, and audio-visual materials to enrich the resources of the Library and promote further research towards the advancement of educational initiatives within the university.
  1. The Knowledge Commons (for undergraduates) and the Research Commons (for postgraduates) sections on the first floor of the Library are open to those who wish to access the Library’s electronic resources using the ICT facilities in the Library. Similarly, the Elsevier training laboratory on the second floor has internet access to all subscribed databases and is open to faculty members.
  1. The Library has received the update of its Springer Link Database with the new content. https://www.springernature.com/g The database provides registered faculty members and researchers with millions of journals, books, works, and proceedings for all disciplines.
  1. The Library has received an update of its OnePetro Database with the new content. https://onepetro.org/journals The database provides registered Faculty members and researchers with information on the oil and gas exploration and production industry.
  1. Weekly statistics of the patronage of Donald Ekong Library showed a 42% increase from five thousand four hundred eighty-three users (5,483) in the previous week to 7,803 users in the current week.
