23RD – 27TH JUNE 2025

 

1.       On Tuesday, 24th June 2025, the University Librarian, Professor Helen Emasealu, received four 300-level students from the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies. The team, led by Godspower Fyness, interviewed the University Librarian on the development initiatives and leadership strides within the University Library. The engagement formed part of a feature story being developed for the department’s newsletter.

 

2.       On Wednesday, 25th June 2025, the office of the University Librarian received twelve (12) copies of four (4) books from the Director of Academic Affairs, University of Port Harcourt. The books are listed as follows:

 

i.                    Stillbirth: The Perils and Societal Indifference. Professor Chris Akani. Valedictory Lecture Series No. 37, 5th June, 2025. Nigeria: Printed and bound by UPPL. Three (3) copies.

ii.                  Statistics: The Man in Your Neighborhood. Professor Mary Paschal Iwundu. Inaugural Lecture Series, No.199. 29th May, 2025. Nigeria: Printed and bound by UPPL. Three (3) copies.   

iii.                Embracing the New Lifestyle. Professor Nene Amabere Jambo. Inaugural Lecture Series, No.198. 15th May, 2025. Nigeria: Printed and bound by UPPL. Three (3) copies.

iv.                Embedded System: The Game-Changer in Modern Industrialization. Inaugural Lecture Series, No.196. Professor Bourdillon Odianonsen Omijeh. 26th February, 2025. Nigeria: Printed and bound by UPPL. Three (3) copies.

 

3.       On Thursday, 26th June 2025, Dr. Janet Robinson, a staff of the Donald E. U. Ekong Library and the Faculty Librarian for Basic Clinical Sciences, celebrated her birthday with library staff and some library users.

4.       During the week, the Donald E. U. Ekong Library acquired daily editions of newspapers to keep staff and students informed on local and global events: The Guardian, Daily Sun, Punch, Vanguard, The Telegraph, Business Day, and This Day. Current issues are available for reading at the Reference Unit and the foyer.

 

5.       Weekly statistics showed an 11.03% increase in patronage, with the number of users rising from 2,982 in the previous week to 3,311 in the current week.

 

6.       The Donald E. U. Ekong Library operated a two-shift schedule, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays.

7.       The Knowledge Commons, designated for undergraduate students, and the Research Commons, reserved for postgraduate students, are open to all students and researchers seeking access to the Library’s electronic resources. Similarly, the Elsevier Training Laboratory, located on the second floor of the Library, offers internet access to all subscribed databases and is available for use by faculty members.

 

8.       The Library has acquired the MaTrics Laboratory (MATLAB), a proprietary multi-paradigm programming language and numeric computing environment designed for matrix manipulation, data plotting, algorithm implementation, user interface creation, and integration with programmes written in other languages.

9.       The Library has received updated content from the SpringerLink Database (https://www.springernature.com/gp). This data helps in the publication of robust and insightful research, supports the development of novel areas of knowledge, and makes information accessible globally.

10.   The Library received updated content on the JSTOR Database (https://www.jstor.org). This database provides registered users with informative materials that cut across every discipline, including the sciences, social sciences, arts, education, technology, law, and other disciplines.

11.   The library has received updated content on the AGORA database (https://www.fao.org/agora/en/). This database furnishes registered users with information materials, journals, audio-visual materials, and other collections centred on agriculture and its related disciplines.

 

12.   The Library has received an update to its Scopus database with new content, accessible at (https://www.scopus.com/home.uri). This database provides registered faculty members and researchers with one of the most comprehensive collections of abstracts and citation data for peer-reviewed literature and information resources across various disciplines.

 

13.   The American Corner Port Harcourt hosted the following two programmes during the week:

 

i.                     “Why Volunteerism: The Power of Collaboration, Strategic Tools, and Effective Action.” It held on Tuesday, 24th June, 2025. The programme had 9 participants.

ii.                  The EducationUSA programme: 5 Essential Steps for Studying in the United States, held on Tuesday, 25th June, 2025. The programme had 12 participants in attendance.

 

14.   The American Corner Port Harcourt (AC-PHC) has acquired a subscription to Chat Generative Predictive Text (ChatGPT) Artificial Intelligence. This AI is available for free at the AC-PHC for users.

 

15.   The ELibraryUSA databases are available to users, and they provide remote access to JSTOR, ProQuest, PressReader, Libby App, BookFlix, and Kanopy. Users are encouraged to register at the American Corner Port Harcourt for guidance on remote access reProgrammes.

 

16.   Upcoming programmes at The American Corner Port Harcourt:

i.        “The Employability Webinar Series on The Prospects in Animation Business in Nigeria” programme will hold on Monday 30, June 2025.

ii.      “The Why Volunteerism and EducationUSA programmes will be held on Tuesday, 1, and Wednesday, 2, July 2025, respectively. Students and members of staff are encouraged to attend.

 

vT     The American Corner recorded two hundred and forty-three (243) users in the week under review.
